100 Years Ago: April 14-20

From The Indianapolis Star, Friday, April 20, 1923: The design submitted by Cleveland, Ohio architects Frank R. Walker and Harry E. Weeks for the Indiana World War Memorial was selected yesterday afternoon by a jury of distinguished architects from 26 entries. The plan proposes a towering shrine of classic Greek architecture, with a pyramid shaped top. Built of Bedford limestone and the interior finished in marble, the structure will be 96 feet square and 190 feet high, rising from a base 220 feet long, 140 feet wide, and 20 feet high. A memorial chamber beneath a glass dome, surrounded by a frieze of idealized deeds of courage in bas-relief, would constitute the central part of the building. The chamber would be dominated by a gigantic figure of Peace Triumphant. The winning architects were awarded the prize of $120,000 (2022:  $2,119,891).
