INDIANAPOLIS — Construction crews began work in December 2022 to construct the Indianapolis Cultural Trail: A Legacy of Gene and Marilyn Glick on Indiana Ave between Blackford St. and West St. Currently, only the south-east bound traffic lane will remain open between N. Blackford St. and N. West St. The closure is anticipated for approximately 9-10 months. This closure, in coordination with the City of Indianapolis Department of Public Works, Madam Walker Legacy Center, and IUPUI is meant to create a safer work zone for construction crews. Pedestrian access to the main entrance to the Madam Walker Legacy Center will remain open for the duration of the construction.
A detour for northbound Indiana Ave vehicles is available by turning south on West St. from Indiana Ave then turning west on Michigan St. (from West St.) and turning north on Blackford St. (from Michigan St.) which will bring vehicles to Indiana Ave where they can turn north to continue northbound on Indiana Ave. Detour signage in place to direct vehicles through the detour.
The driveway to the Madam Walker Legacy Center employee lot will be restricted to July 2023. Access to IUPUI parking lots A, B and C will remain as well as access to the St. Philips Episcopal Church and Goodwin Plaza Apartments.
A temporary sidewalk with ADA ramps will be added to guarantee safety for those walking and rolling along Indiana Avenue including patrons of the Madam Walker Legacy Center events. The lane restriction is expected to last through October 2023. Signage will be in place to direct pedestrians to the entrance to the Madam Walker Legacy Center.
