INDIANAPOLIS — City officials recently joined Far Eastside community partners at the Community Alliance for the Far Eastside to announce the Former Oaktree Apartment Site Request for Information (RFI) from the City of Indianapolis Department of Metropolitan Development (DMD). The redevelopment is a key piece of Mayor Hogsett’s neighborhood and inclusive growth strategy.
The Former Oaktree Apartment Site RFI is an anchor site redevelopment opportunity to bring mixed-use, transit-oriented development, including new housing opportunities, community assets and civic space.
Since 2018, the city has spent over $3 million on the site, including acquisition, demolition, and community planning. In 2019, the City of Indianapolis acquired the site and demolished the vacant 300-unit apartment complex after years of declining housing standards and public safety issues. In 2021, DMD embarked on the Oaktree Revitalization Plan with an advisory committee comprised of the Community Alliance of the Far Eastside, La Plaza, Far Eastside Community Council, and other residents and stakeholders. Released at the beginning of 2022, the Oaktree Revitalization Plan is the guide for future redevelopment of the 19-acre site that maps out community values, overarching aspirations, and ideas for the site’s design.
