• Cold weather means you need to bring your pets indoors. It is illegal to leave dogs chained outside overnight at any time, but in the winter months, it is cruel and will lead to a big fine if you are caught. Please bring them inside where it is warm and dry. If you see a pet left outside in the cold, please call the Indianapolis Mayor’s Action Line at 317-327-4622 or visit them online request.indy.gov and they will do their best to help.
• The Marion County Health Department is urging anyone with flu symptoms to NOT go to hospital emergency rooms for treatment. Currently, hospitals are overwhelmed with patients seeking treatment for common ailments that could be handled through urgent care or telemedicine with a primary care physician. Only individuals suffering from serious ailments, such as shortness of breath, chest pains, or inability to walk should go to the ER. While you are at it, prevention is worth a pound of cure. Wash your hands, avoid contact with sick persons, cover your mouth when coughing or sneezing, and clean and disinfect surfaces regularly.
• The Irvington Luminaria was a huge success this year, thanks to the hard work of volunteers and residents of Irvington and the surrounding neighborhoods. A special shout-out to Sue Beecher, the Arbuckles, the Keatings, Craig Rutherford as Krampus, the crew that set up lights along East Washington St., the Mortville Flea Market band, and many, many hands that made it possible. In addition, they were able to collect a lot of canned food for the Neighborhood Food Collective.
• Thank you to everyone who donated gifts for Gaia Works this year. Jan and her many elves were very busy wrapping and getting this ready for the kids at Coburn Place on Monday night. It is truly a labor of love and caring.
