Applause!: Dec. 16-22

• Irvington lost a good guy recently when we lost Bruce Gable. For years, Bruce organized the Benton House reading of “A Christmas Carol” and he was very involved with activities in the community where he was born and raised. He was honored with a Founders Award from the Irvington Community Council in 2012 in recognition for his many years of volunteering. A memorial service will be held in the spring. He is survived by wife Carolyn, his two children and four grandchildren. He will be missed.
• Another sad passing needs to be noted: John G’Sell, the long-time delivery driver for Ball Park Pizza on 10th St., passed away on Dec. 6. John was a graduate of Howe, and worked at Chicago Tube and Iron for many years, then delivered for Ball Park until his retirement earlier this year. He is survived by his wife Becky, four children, and five grandchildren. A visitation will be held on Friday, Dec. 16 from 11:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m. at Oakley-Hammond, 5342 E. Washington St.
• Broad Ripple Ave. will be reopened on or just after Dec. 16, as the Dept. of Public Works has completed Phase I of the reconstruction. DPW placed stormwater infrastructure under the street, to help ease flooding. In spring 2023, DPW will continue the project, extending the remaining stormwater trunk line and replacing the street and sidewalks from Guildford to College.
• In other travel news, the interchange at SR 267 and I-65 will be open on or after Dec. 18 near Whitestown. Due to supply chain problems, there is temporary lighting set up at the interchange. Surface work will begin in late spring 2023. The completion of the I-65/CR 550 South has been delayed due to supply chain issues, and is expected to wrap up after May 2023.
• The Indiana Dept. of Education has launched a dashboard which displays a view of school and student performance that enables parents to make better choices for their children’s education. Visit indianagps.doe.in.gov for more information.
