From The Indianapolis Times, Tuesday, January 17, 1922: Sixty destitute men, with families from six to nine persons, went to work cleaning streets and sewers today as a step toward relieving the city’s unemployment situation. These are the first of 200 men who will be put to work as needed by the city departments. The relief program was made possible when the city council voted to transfer $20,000 (2020: $314,448) to an emergency unemployment fund. It is available to unemployed and destitute men residing in Indianapolis more than six months prior to the first of the year. The 60 men, selected from a list of more than 1,000 who have applied for jobs, will be paid $2 (2020: $31) a day under the emergency plan. Many jobless wanting to register for the program crowded the corridors of City Hall today.
