• Taylor Martin’s Indy Magic will present their biggest show of the year on Tuesday, June 1 at the Indy Fringe Outdoor Theater (719 E. St. Clair) at 7 p.m. Cody Clark hosts the Young Whippersnappers of Magic with a great line-up of emerging magicians. Ticket are $20 and available online at indyfringe.org.
• The Fort Ben Cultural Campus, which will open on June 18 officially, will have a lot of great features. One of the coolest ones is the memorial walk, which plays “Taps” at dusk and the walkway lights turn on and create a unique pattern on the pathway. During the day, it plays other tunes when you walk down it! Check out the Marching Steps on the campus located on Otis Ave. behind the Sterrett Center in Lawrence. They are just now putting the final touches on the project.
• IPS recently announced five finalists for the 2022 IPS Teacher of the Year. Tina Ahlgren (Center for Inquiry School 2, Middle School Math), Rachael Jandziszak (School 102, Pre-K), Betsy Kelley (Center for Inquiry School 70, First Grade), Sheila McPherson (Newcomer Program, PE/Health), Sarah TeKolste (Shortridge HS, Spanish) were all selected by a committee of their peers for the honor. The winner will be announced in June.
• The first annual plant marketplace at Saint Joseph Hall will be held Saturday, May 29 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at St. Joseph Brewery, 617 East North St. Tickets are free for the first 200 people, and $5 per person after, available at www.eventbrite.com/e/1st-annual-plant-marketplace. Plants, pots, jewelry, demonstrations and more will be available.
• All Indianapolis Public Library locations will be closed May 29-31 for the Memorial Day holiday weekend, and will open with expanded hours on June 1. Branch and Central Library hours will be Mon. & Tues. 10 a.m.-8 p.m., Wed.-Fri. 10 a.m.-6 p.m., Sat. 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and closed Sun.
• The Eiteljorg Museum’s 29th annual Indian Market and Festival this year will be a virtual experience, where guests can shop online for beautiful jewelry, pottery, paintings and other artworks created by 100 Native American and First Nations artists from the U.S. and Canada. Running from June 14 to 28, the Virtual Indian Market features music, dance performances and cultural presentations, including Grammy Award-winning musician Joanne Shenandoah (Oneida). This year’s event is entirely free. Eiteljorg.org/IndianMarketandFestival is the online hub to shop for Native artworks directly from the artists, enjoy the performances, download family activities and learn more about Native artists and their cultures.
Memorial Day weekend is more than just the beginning of summer and cook-outs and races. It’s a time to reflect on the sacrifice others made on our behalf as they served our country.
