• It’s time to Spring Forward! Daylight Saving Time begins at 2 a.m. on Sunday, March 14. Set your clocks forward one hour!
• The Poets Laureate of Lawrence plan to publish a collection of poems, The Literary Journal of Arts for Lawrence. The group is accepting submissions to be included. If you are interested, e-mail lawrencepoets@gmail.com
• Garfield Park is hosting a Bird Walk with a naturalist on Saturday, March 20 from 8 a.m.-9:30 a.m. Registration is required and tickets cost $5. Register online at https://bit.ly/3dyDbB3 and remember to bring your binoculars and wear walking shoes. Social distancing will be required, and wear a mask when you can’t social distance. Garfield Park is locate at 2505 Conservatory Dr. on the southeast side of Indianapolis.
• Kudos to Warren Central’s squads! On March 6, the Winter Guards competed at Hamilton Southeastern. The Prelude Guard earned a Silver Rating, the Cadet Guard earned a Gold Rating, the JV Guard placed 8th, and the World Guard placed 1st (and is still undefeated this season!).
• The Salvation Army Rehab Center is having a sock and undergarment drive through April 15. Please bring NEW items to the American Legion Post 276, 327 Main St., Beech Grove.
• The state moratorium on power shutoffs during winter expires March 15. If you are still struggling with your electric bill, please contact the energy company to arrange extensions or payment plans.
• Marking one year since the pandemic started in Indiana, Gleaners Food Bank noted that they swung into emergency operations, serving over 100 million meals over the course of 2020. That’s a 137% increase from 2019. People stepped up with donations to fill in gaps caused by a loss of surplus goods from retailers. However, the organization lost many volunteers. The National Guard and temp workers helped out to keep food flowing to the people most in need.
• The Golden Ace will have a two-day St. Patrick’s Day celebration — their 88th! On Saturday, March 13 from noon and on Wednesday, March 17 from 10 a.m. There will be no tent but there will be outdoor seating. There will be four Indianapolis Irish bands (none from Ireland) to entertain, and social distancing must be followed.
On March 13, 2009 the first issue of the Eastside Voice (now Weekly View) hit the streets. Over the last 13 years there have been many highs and some lows, but through it all, we’ve been blessed.
