Irvington Post Office Awarded Preservation Grant

INDIANAPOLIS — Irvington Development Organization (IDO) and the Irvington Historical Society (IHS) have received a $50,000 Historic Preservation Fund grant from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Division of Historic Preservation & Archaeology toward the ongoing renovation of the Historic Irvington Post Office.
The grant — which will be matched one-to-one with private dollars — help fund specific exterior improvements to the building. These improvements include: masonry repairs, new windows and doors, and the construction of a new storefront. The total estimate for this phase of construction is $117,000, with another $100,000 allocated for the current phase of stabilization and a new roof.
Vacant, dilapidated and facing demolition, the building was purchased last year through a partnership between IDO and IHS and is currently being renovated.

A fundraiser for the building will be held at the Bona Thompson Memorial Center, 5350 E. University Ave., on October 12th.
