INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) closed the intersection of Sherman Drive and Thompson Road on Monday, Aug. 17, to begin construction of a single-lane roundabout. The approximately $1.6 million project also includes new sidewalks and ADA access ramps. The intersection is expected to reopen in early November.
During the closure, westbound traffic from Shelbyville Road will use Gray Road, Edgewood Avenue and McFarland Road to connect with Thompson Road. Eastbound traffic will travel from Thompson Road, using McFarland Road, Edgewood Avenue and Gray Road to reconnect at Shelbyville Road.
Traffic traveling southbound from Sherman Drive will use East Hanna Avenue and Carson Avenues to connect with Thompson Road. Northbound traffic will travel from Thompson Road using Carson Avenue and East Hanna Avenues.
This roundabout is one of six major infrastructure improvements in Franklin and Perry Townships by Indy DPW in 2020. Projects already completed this summer include a roundabout at Five Points Road and Combs Road and major street rehabilitation on Southeastern Avenue. Two other roundabouts at Stop 11 Road and Five Points Road and Five Points Road and Edgewood Avenue and a new bridge where Franklin Road crosses Big Run Creek are expected to open this fall.
The roundabouts are similar to four Franklin Township roundabouts completed by Indy DPW in 2019.
