• The ladies of the Weekly View would like to thank all the kind folks who have contributed cat food for our community office kitties. We’ve had a few donations of bags of dry cat food for the gang here, and we (and the cats) appreciate it!
• Sorry to see Emily Mack will be leaving her job as Director of the Dept. of Metropolitan Development. She’s taking a major job in Chattanooga, Tennessee. She leaves at the end of August.
• Congratulations to Janette Jackson, who was recently named the City of Lawrence’s Director of Minority and Women Business Development. She had previously served as the Human Resources Director for Lawrence.
• Four organizations were recently awarded Violence Prevention Grants. RecycleForce, VOICES, Community Action of Greater Indianapolis, and the Edna Martin Christian Center received $75,000 each for programs and training to help reduce violence in neighborhoods.
• The Indiana Repertory Theater’s costume designer has a great video on how to make masks. Check it out at www.irtliveblog.com and grab some cool fabrics!
• There will be an online event with the Indiana Historical Society on Thursday, Aug. 27 at 7 p.m., ‘Rethinking Redlining & Segregation: Prologue to the COVID-19 Crisis.” N.D.B Connolly will be speaking. To register for the event, which will take place via Zoom, visit indianahistory.org.
• The Riley Boyhood Home Museum will be hosting a presentation on Eugene V. Debs on Saturday, Aug. 29 at 7 p.m. The presentation by Allison Duerk, Executive Director of the EVD Museum in Terre Haute, will discuss the friendship between Riley and Debs. The event will be held outside in the gardens of the Museum, and will be on Facebook Live. The event is free.
• Congratulations to the local schools that achieved the distinction of Purple Star Schools. These schools support military families by assigning a point of contact for military families, passing a resolution supporting military students and families, guaranteeing interviews for service members and their immediate family who meet the minimum job qualifications, and more. Local Purple Heart Schools include Franklin Community School Corp., Shortridge High School, Lawrence Township schools, and Warren Central High School.
• Thank you to everyone who has been picking up old issues of the Weekly View from the drop boxes in front of our office at 195 N. Shortridge Rd. We’re glad that the old issues are being put to good use for your craft projects, moving, kitties and puppies, and garden beds! If you know people who have been picking up current issues for these purposes, let them know about a better alternative.
