• The Irvington Farmer’s Market will be held Sunday, Aug. 9 from noon-3 p.m. at Ellenberger Park, 5301 E. St. Clair. Per orders from the Health Dept., the market will be restricted to food staples such as produce, meat, cheese, etc. There will be some pre-packaged foods available. Masks are required. No pets are allowed. Please follow the guidelines to ensure a safe market!
• There was a great turnout for the Irvington Historical Society’s Ice Cream Socially-Distanced event Aug. 1 and 2. In addition to lots of great ice cream, the Bona Thompson Memorial Center hosted a showing of Rita Spalding’s “Paris” works — artwork inspired by her trip to, you guessed it, Paris. Beautiful!
• Ambrose has purchased the former Navistar plant on Brookville Rd. and plans a big investment in redeveloping it into an industrial complex that will hopefully bring living-wage jobs into the community.
• Fascinating to watch the slow walk of the “new building” to its new home on the Lawrence Cultural Campus. Arts for Lawrence has been doing a bang-up job of making the arts accessible in Lawrence for years now.
• Thank you to the Black Hat Society of Irvington and those Dancing Witches who made an appearance in PAR-10 Irvington on Sunday, Aug. 2. The ladies (and gents) have been showing up in Irvington to cast their lovely spells during the pandemic, whenever weather permits.
• The Indiana Historical Society will present History Happy Hour: Another Brief History of Underwear online on Thursday, Aug. 13 at 5:30 p.m. Fashion historian Karen DePauw will discuss the role underwear plays in fashion. The program takes place on Zoom, and tickets are free, but a donation to the IHS is encouraged. Visit indianahistory.org for more information.
• Since March 16, Indy Parks has provided more than 156,000 meals to families around Marion County. Annually, Indy Parks serves close to 390,000 free meals to youth and adults during the school year and throughout the summer months. With the severity of COVID-19, Indy Parks has expanded its meal service to continue offering much needed meals to residents who may otherwise go hungry.
• The Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana Authors Awards is announcing the shortlisted books in the children’s category of the revamped award program. The winners will be announced Sept. 1. Indy-connected authors who made the list include John David Anderson (Granted); Michael Homoya, Shane Gibson and Gillian Harris (Wake Up, Woods); and Philip Hoose (Attucks! Oscar Robertson and the Basketball Team that Awakened a City).
• The Indiana state face mask mandate continues through Wednesday, Aug. 26. Please continue to wear a face covering indoors in public and outside if social distancing isn’t possible. This goes for everyone over the age of 8. Thank you for helping to keep all of us safe during this pandemic!
