INDIANAPOLIS — Thanks to the support of a long-time donor, The Salvation Army helped 200 local children in need of new shoes to start the school year. On Tuesday, July 14, elementary and middle school students from across the metro area got a personal shopping experience at The Salvation Army Fountain Square corps community center, located at 1337 Shelby Street in the heart of Fountain Square.
The Salvation Army partners with the Shoe Carnival at 10609 East Washington St. to secure quality athletic shoes in a wide variety of sizes. In addition to the shoes, the children get to “shop” for new socks in their favorite styles and colors.
The Salvation Army works directly with Indianapolis Public Schools and local agencies to identify the school-age children in the most need on the east side of Indianapolis. This year, 120 children identified through this collaboration attended the shoe giveaway as a way to help them be better prepared for the upcoming school year. Children participating in The Salvation Army’s low-cost summer day camp programs were included in this program, as well as those living in the Ruth Lilly Women and Children’s Center, a homeless shelter operated by The Salvation Army in downtown Indianapolis.
