100 Years Ago This Week: Aug. 23-30

From The Indianapolis Star, Sunday, August 24, 1913:  The Feast of Lanterns given last night by the Brookside Civic League in Spades Park was one of the most beautiful events of its kind seen in Indianapolis for many years. Thousands of lanterns were strung throughout the park, along the street surrounding it, and on Brookside Av almost to 10th St. The refreshment stands were also decorated with lanterns. Eight to ten thousand people visited the park during the evening and the grounds were filled with people at all times. The streets leading to and from the park were crowded with visitors up to mid-night. A concert was given by the Letter Carriers Band and donkey cart and automobile rides were enjoyed by many. Half of the proceeds will be divided between Cheeryvale and the Summer Mission camps.
