Forum Answers Questions About New Law

INDIANAPOLIS — A group of state and local lawmakers from Marion County will host a public forum and panel discussion in Indianapolis on August 7 to answer questions about Indiana’s new expungement law that enables individuals to petition courts to have old criminal offenses removed from their records.
The meeting is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. August 7 in Rooms A and C of the Julia Carson Center, located at 300 E. Fall Creek Parkway, Indianapolis.
The program will focus on Public Law 159-2013, legislation passed earlier this year by the Indiana General Assembly that allows people to have previous convictions of a number of non-violent offenses — such as drunken driving and drug dealing — removed from their records. The change will remove those crimes from public background checks used by employers so the offenses do not prevent an rehabilitated ex-offender from finding a job.
