School 97 Rehab Opens as Market Rate Apartments

INDIANAPOLIS — Core Redevelopment recently opened the former Roberts School 97 at 1401 East 10th St. as market-rate apartments. The historic Art Moderne school was named as one of the 10 most endangered historic sites by Indiana Landmarks.
School 97 was designed as Indianapolis’ first school for students with physical disabilities. The school’s accessibility was ahead of its time, with ramps and an elevator that have been restored. The school closed in 1986 but reopened as a IPS Key School, then Horizon Middle School, before closing in 2006. IPS wanted to demolish the building, but Indiana Landmarks intervened, and petitioned the school to find a reuse solution.
Core Redevelopment has a 100 year lease on the building, and has renamed it Roberts School Flats. The company, which has also redeveloped a former school and the Mission Apartments in Irvington, has rehabbed the building carefully, creating studio, one bedroom, and two bedroom apartments, Several units include the original school features like chalkboards and built in benches. The project cost was about $3 million.
Most of the units are already leased. Visit coreredevelopment.com for more information.
