• Irving Circle Concerts continue at Irving Circle Park on Sat., Aug. 11 from 7-9 p.m. This month’s concert features the Round Ups, a great local country swing band. The concert is free, and concessions will be available. The Friends of Irving Circle put on this music series and raise funds to keep the fountain and landscaping on the Circle in tip-top shape. It is a family-friendly event.
• The City of Lawrence is holding a Community Safety Day Sat. Aug. 11 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at 9350 E. 59th St. Families are welcome to come out to a day of fun exploring police and fire vehicles, K-9 demonstrations, bicycle giveaway, games, prizes, and lots more.
• The Broad Ripple Carnival will be held Aug. 9-12 in Broad Ripple Park, 1550 Broad Ripple Ave. Hours are 6-9 p.m. Thurs., 5-9 p.m. Fri., noon-9 p.m. Sat., andn noon-7 p.m. on Sun. This family-friendly event features carnival rides, food, activities, a beer and wine tent for the over-21 crowd, and an exhibit on the history of Broad Ripple. There will be a vintage and artisan market on Saturday and a car show Sunday. Friday night is “Dog Night” featuring a dog walk in the park.
• The Educator’s Village on Rural St. is looking great! Three homes have sold, one to a local teacher! Two are pending sale, and there’s still more construction to do. NEAR is doing important work in lifting the east side. Visit nearindy.org for more information about homes available for sale.
• Upcoming neighborhood meetings include Grace Tuxedo/Bosart Brown/Hollywood Place on Mon., Aug, 13 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Tuxedo Park Baptist Church (29 North Grant Ave.), Rivoli Park on Tues., Aug. 14 from 6:00-7:30 p.m. at Clifford Corners (3125 East 10th St.), and Springdale on Tues., Aug. 14 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at Alford House (2428 E. 10th St.).
• American newspaper publishers and printers got a little relief from the U.S. government on the March tariffs imposed on Canadian newsprint. The Commerce Department reduced tariffs from a high of over 22 percent to a peak of nearly 17 percent, but also made the tariffs permanent, according to the Dept. of Commerce. As fans of the Weekly View and other local community newspapers may know, our printers increased printing costs to us twice this year, passing along part of their increased costs.
