• The sudden closing of Lazy Daze Coffeehouse in Irvington caught people by surprise, and has generated an outpouring of tributes for the coffee house that has become a home away from home for many. Musicians, poets, artists, and neighbors have gathered there for the last 10 years, and many memories have been shared online. River George, a mainstay at the open readings, sent the Weekly View a handwritten tribute to all the great people who have made the place so special, and was at the May 23 gathering on the patio. He noted that building owner Dale Harkins wants to continue the singer/songwriter and poetry events as scheduled. As for the future of the prime real estate on Johnson Ave., it won’t remain empty for long. Fingers crossed that any business that goes in there will be just as cool and community-minded as Lazy Daze.
• Farmer’s markets are the best place to get your produce fix for the week. The Irvington Farmer’s Market opens June 9 at noon at Ellenberger Park, 5301 E. St. Clair. A good time will be had by all.
• Another craft brewing company has opened — the Indiana City Brewing Company at 24 Shelby St. They opened their doors on May 25, in a historic building that used to be the Home Brewing Company, before Prohibition. Between Flat12, Sun King, Black Acre, and Triton brewing up seriously good suds, the eastside has become a hoppin’ mecca for pints and growlers.
• Congratulations go out to Nativity Cadets’ kickball team, which took home the Cadet City championship title in the Catholic Youth Organization kickball tourney in late May. Great work!
• The FACE clinic is holding a cat adoption drive in June, offering 30 cats for adoption for only $30 each. They range from 10 months to 9 years old, and have been selected by FACE staff and volunteers as being great candidates for forever homes. They are all spayed/neutered, vaccinated, microchipped, and tested for feline leukemia/FIV. You must fill out an adoption application before meeting any of the adoptable cats. Visit www.facespayneuter.org for an application and to take a look at all the cats up for adoption, or drop by the clinic at 1505 Massachusetts Ave. (near 16th and Mass Ave.).
