INDIANAPOLIS — Every year, on March 14th or 3.14, as a fundraising and community building event, NESCO (Near Eastside Community Organization) hosts the Annual NESCO Pi Day. Pi being the mathematical constant of 3.14, the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. This event not only raises money to continue the community building work NESCO is known for but also to bring residents together, teach children fun math games and, most importantly, compete in the PIE baking contest.
Celebrate Pi Day Tues. evening March 14 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Englewood Commonwealth Gym, 23 N. Rural, located next-door to Englewood Church 57 N. Rural St. Parking in the back of Englewood Church.
A donation of $7 at the door will get you a slice of pie from sponsor Wick’s Pies, along with ice cream and a beverage (coffee, milk or water). For an additional $3 you can get a slice of pizza.
There will be card and board games for adults, or bring your own, and beanbag tosses or “pie hole.” In addition, Paramount School of Excellence is hosting math activities for kids.
For the culinarily inclined, there is a baked pie contest, with two categories — savory and sweet, and three classes — amateur, student and professional. All are welcome to enter. Contestants must be present to win. Bring two pies — one for the judges, and one for auctioning to the highest bidder. The Notorious T.I.M. Harmon is auctioneer. If you want a chance to take home a delicious homemade pie that you can’t get anywhere else, bring some dough, and support a good cause.
