From The Indianapolis News, Monday, February 19: At a special meeting of the directors the Indianapolis Chapter of the American Red Cross, Josiah K. Lilly offered $25,000 (2016: $476,495), on behalf of Eli Lilly & Co, for a base hospital of 500 beds in the event the United States is drawn into the European War. The offer was made as a memorial to Col. Eli Lilly and would include surgical, medical equipment, and tents. The Red Cross would be in command of the hospital and equipment, ready to be moved to any point desired. John H. Holiday offered a resolution of acceptance that was adopted. One of the provisions of the gift was that it was to help Indiana medical men and surgeons realize their ambitions to be of greatest service to the nation in event of war.
