From The Indianapolis Star, Monday, April 21, 1913: Mayor Shank issued a proclamation designating the week of May 11th as Clean-Up Week. The proclamation declares, “It is the duty of every citizen in the great theme of life to do all in his or her power to perfect human kind, give human aid, and promote physical fitness. One of the essentials in making this a success is that our city must be healthful, our homes must be beautiful and made pleasant and happy. The secret of all happiness and joy at the present time is health, for what doth it profit a man….if his own yard or alley is clean and his neighbor’s neglected? For, the cleanliness of his own premises are readily offset by the insanitary condition of his neighbor’s.”
