INDIANAPOLIS — The entire community is invited to experience the many features of the newly-renovated Southport Branch of The Indianapolis Public Library during its Grand Reopening Open House on Sat., Oct. 15 from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m. at the Southport Branch, 2630 E. Stop 11 Rd.
The $1.1 million renovation to the 16,000-square-foot facility is the first such project since the branch opened in 1974. In addition to a new entrance closer to the parking lot on the building’s north side, patrons are greeted by a large, open and flexible area around the checkout desk and a marketplace corridor that leads them through an array of redesigned areas. These include separate areas for young children, teens and adults; a public computer area with 21 PCs; two group study rooms with adjoining open spaces; updated and fully-accessible restrooms; new shelving; and additional seating, tables and electrical outlets for charging devices.
The branch’s new Mary Frances Rubly & Jerry Hummer Community Room is a public meeting and activity space with seating for 80 individuals, newly-integrated audio-visual equipment and colorful works of art by Indiana artists.
Special activities throughout the day include welcoming comments and introduction of honored guests at 2 p.m., followed by the “Animalia” family program. The Library’s eBook Tinker Station will provide demonstrations on downloading electronic materials onto personal devices from 1 – 3 p.m. Light refreshments will be available.
