• Irvington and the east side are saying farewell to Dufour’s in Irvington, one of the “urban pioneers” on the east side. Maria Dufour decided to retire from the business, which will close Jan. 31. Drop by to wish her well at the restaurant at the corner of Washington and Audubon, and thank her for all she has done for the community.
• The Auxiliary to Community Hospital East will sponsor a jewelry sale by REG & COMPANY on Feb. 4, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Feb. 5, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. The sale will be held in the breezeway near the main lobby. • Play Ball Indiana, located next to Forest Manor Park is looking for coaches and other support. Their goal is to rebuild baseball in the inner city of Indianapolis. • On Sun., Feb. 7 at 1:30 p.m. at All Souls Unitarian Church, 5805 E. 56th St., The Butler University Chorale will perform. The Chorale is composed of graduate and undergraduate students from professional academic disciplines in music. The concert is free; donations will be gratefully accepted.
• Sims Boxing Gym is hosting a bottled water drive for the city of Flint, Michigan until Jan. 29. Water donations can be dropped off at the gym, 4615 E. 10th St.
• Coal Yard Coffee Co. at 5547 Bonna Ave. in Irvington is hosting Sweet Thursday Jazz at the Coal Yard Jan. 28 from 7-10 p.m. There will be beer and food as well as coffee, and Charlie Ballantine will play. The event is pay-what-you-want, with all proceeds going to the band. Check it out!
• The First Friday shows look like there will be a record number of galleries and openings on Feb. 5 from 6-9 p.m. The Primary Gallery will present The Herron Art Show in a multi-artist event at the Murphy Art Center, 1043 Virginia Ave. in Fountain Square. The Harrison Center, 1505 N. Delaware St., will feature five artist-couples in its “Follow Your Heart” gallery opening. The Stutz Artists Association will open “What Makes My Heart Beat?” in partnership with the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women campaign; the Stutz Gallery is located at 212 W. 10th St., Suite B110. In addition, check out the Coal Yard at 5547 Bonna Ave. in Irvington for some great new artists.
• For the first time since it began offering free access to digital materials in 2006, The Indianapolis Public Library has surpassed one million yearly downloads of eBooks and eAudiobooks in 2015. While the use of eBooks and other electronic resources within the Library continues to rise, printed books remain the most popular format at nearly 63 percent of all checked out items.
• Third Annual Seed Swap Saturday, January 30th from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Historic Benton House (312 S. Downey Ave.) This is a free event for Indy’s urban gardeners at all levels (beginner to expert). Bring your seeds and stories and share with others. If you are new to seed saving, come and learn from Indy’s seed-saving community.
