• The Indianapolis Public Library announced that there were more than three million digital checkouts on the Libby app in 2024. The Libby app enables library cardholders to access a huge collection of e-books, audiobooks, and digital magazines for free on their home devices.
• “The Artifacts We Leave Behind” is a new exhibit by the Irvington Historical Society. In a boarding house on Whittier Place, a tenant rescued numerous artifacts from the attic in the 1990s. Costume jewelry, artistic hair brushes, clothespins, and even items from the Chicago World’s Fair had been stashed up there for decades. These and other items are now on display at the Bona Thompson Memorial Library in Irvington. They are open on the weekends from 1 to 4 at 5350 University Ave. The exhibit runs through April 30.
• A big thanks to Mirror Indy, the independent nonprofit news site for linking to our columnist C.J. Woods in a recent newsletter. We get a lot of compliments from readers about his columns, as well as our other columnists, and our crossword puzzles, for some reason. Glad to know others are taking note.
• Kan-Kan Cinema will show a marathon session of the classic film Groundhog Day on, well, Groundhog Day, Feb. 2. Shows begin at 1 p.m. and run through 7:45. You can get a Groundhog Day Pass and watch it more than once. Visit kankanindy.com to order tickets ($12 general admission). The all-day pass is $20 (click on Passes).
• The City of Lawrence recently redesigned its Visit Lawrence Web site, making it easier to navigate to information about restaurants, neighborhoods, and Harrison State Park. Visit VisitLawrenceIndiana.com to see the updates.
• Looks like there is a new owner of the old Marsh store at 18th and Albany in Beech Grove. Mechanical Skills has bought it and plans to move their operations there, teaching and qualifying apprentice plumbers. There is a serious shortage of plumbers, and with more space at the new location, they will be able to take more students. Beech Grove City Council needs to approve a rezoning request before they can begin building.
• The Hoosier Herpetological Society will hold its 2025 Reptile and Amphibian Show on Saturday, Feb. 8 at the Garfield Park Conservatory from 3-7 p.m. They will be there to show off some cool critters and answer questions about the care of these creatures. Admission is free.
• There will be a kind of anti-Valentine’s Day Valentine’s Day market at shops in the Irvington Lodge 666 on Friday, Feb. 14 from 5-10 p.m. Market Vintage, Hampton & Co. will be open with deals and craft stations, plus Monsterz Inc. will have a comedy show at 7:30 p.m. for those over 21. On the second and third floor of the Lodge from 6-11 p.m., there will be over 30 artists and vendors at the 6th annual Amorous Art for adults only. No one under 18 will be admitted. The building is located at 5515 E. Washington St.
