Eiteljorg Museum Hosts New Exhibits, Jingle Rails

INDIANAPOLIS — At the Eiteljorg now through March 9: a spectacular new exhibition of Native glass sculptures continues: Preston Singletary: Raven and the Box of Daylight. This multimedia exhibition with video projection and soundscape features more than 60 glass sculptures by acclaimed artist Preston Singletary (Tlingit) that retell a story from oral tradition from the Pacific Northwest Coast.
In connection with the Preston Singletary exhibition, Eiteljorg visitors can attend a public outdoor glassblowing demonstration from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday Dec. 7 at the museum, conducted by artists from Hot Blown Glass. The demonstration is included with regular admission.
The Eiteljorg’s annual holiday model train display is back for its 15th year: the Fifth Third Bank Jingle Rails: The Great Western Adventure is open now and continues through Jan. 20. Eight model electric trains ramble through tunnels and over trestles, past backdrops representing the skyline of downtown Indianapolis and the landmarks of the American West. Adult tickets are $20 at the door; but get a discount by ordering advance tickets online at Eiteljorg.org/JingleRails. Children ages four and under get in free. Admission to Jingle Rails includes admission to the rest of the Eiteljorg Museum.
The Eiteljorg will offer Winter Market events Saturday Dec. 7, as well as on Dec. 14. A group of local artists will show and sell their handmade art from booths in the museum’s Eagle Commons.
Jingle Rails and the Eiteljorg Museum will be open for extended hours, until 7 p.m., on the following dates: Dec. 13-14, Dec. 19 through 22, and Dec. 26 through 29. Normally the museum closes at 5 p.m.
There is also a new traveling exhibition on the Eiteljorg’s second floor: After Promontory, an exhibit of historic 19th-century photographs of trains in the American West. It’s included with regular admission. The Center for Railroad Photography & Art and the Eiteljorg have collaborated to present this exhibition.
The Eiteljorg again this year is a donation drop-off point for new, unwrapped toys that will be delivered to economically disadvantaged children residing on the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians Reservation in Belcourt, North Dakota. Donations of new toys will be accepted through Dec. 13 for the Toys for Turtle Mountain Annual Toy Drive.
