• IMPD East District Community Resource Unit is selling t-shirts for $25 to help support officers and community engagement projects. They are light blue with an IMPD badge and look cool. • Sahm’s will take over the former Black Acre/Scarlett Lane space in Irvington, 5644 E. Washington St. They announced on Facebook that the concept will be similar to the former downtown location, as a tavern and sports bar. The target opening date is Oct. 1 (just in time for Halloween)!
• St. Lucas Lofts on the corner of New York and Rural just opened, providing one- and two-bedroom apartments for low-income individuals. Englewood CDC teamed up with CVS Health Investment to create the housing, and rent will be on a sliding scale depending on income. The complex also offers social services for residents, including food banks and health care.
• Will you be going to the Benton House Book Sale on July 19-21? Hope so, because they had a record number of books donated. Hours are Friday, 5-8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Sunday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Hardcovers are $2, paperbacks $1, and children’s books are $1. Sunday is bag day, where you can fill a bag for $5. Cash or cards are accepted.
• On Saturday, July 13 in the evening, random gun violence caused a lot of damage to businesses in the 2800 block of East 10th St., including Sam’s Square Pie. Business leaders are asking for the public to continue to support their businesses, as well as for people to work together to reduce violence in our community. If you see something, SAY something!
• The Friends of Irving Circle put on another great Saturday show with Audio Diner on July 13. It is a terrific showcase for local talent, plus you get to hang out with your neighbors! The next one is on Aug. 10 at 7 p.m., so mark your calendar!
• The Bottleworks Market will be held on Saturday, July 20 at Bottleworks Indy, 811 E. 10th St. in the revamped Coca-Cola plant. There will be a lot going on between 11 a.m.-7 p.m., with vendors, and the Garage Hall food court will be open.
• Poets Laureate of Lawrence will meet on Tuesday, July 23 for a reading by Mary Sexson and Lylanne Musselman, both local published poets. After their reading at 7 p.m., there will be an open mic period. The reading will take place at Theatre at the Fort, 8920 Otis Ave.
• Everyone is invited to the Glendale Library Branch, 3660 E. 62nd St. on Monday, July 29 from 4-6 p.m. for Tap Tap Evening, a Haitian Cultural Event. The event will help tie people to the Creole language, and history and cultural arts of Haiti through storytelling, drumming, and much more. If you wanted to know more about Haiti, this is a great event. No registration needed. The event is free.
