Applause!: July 12-18

• There will be an Ice Cream Social on the Circle downtown on Thursday, July 18 from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. For only $5 you can get a sundae  scooped up by community leaders and mascots. Go get your ice cream!
• Ben Asaykwee and Claire Wilcher are starring in White City Murder, a musical murder comedy based on H.H. Holmes at the Phoenix Theatre from July 19-Aug. 4. Tickets are available online at phoenixtheatre.org. It will sell out fast, so be sure to get advance tickets. The Phoenix Theatre is located at 705 N. Illinois St.
• Congratulations are in order for IMPD Captain Scott Hessong, who was just promoted to the position of Commander of the Downtown District, and Lieutenant Corey Mims, who is the new Major of the Community Engagement and Outreach Bureau. Commander Ida Williams and Commander Phil Burton will be retiring.
• There will be an Open House for Christian Park at the Family Center, 4200 English Ave. on Wednesday, July 17 at 6:30-8:00 p.m. There will be several Indy Parks officials on hand to get input on park improvements.
• Friends of Irving Circle will host a concert on the circle, 5703 University Ave. on Saturday, July 13 with Audio Diner at 7 p.m. Bring the family to enjoy music, refreshments, and community. Concessions are available, with proceeds going to support the upkeep on the park and fountain.
• The Irvington Farmers Market will be held on Sunday, July 14 from noon-3 p.m. at Ellenberger Park, 5301 E. St. Clair. There will be music, food, produce and artisan vendors. The Irvington Garden Club does a great job sponsoring this farmer’s market in the park.
• Get your tickets early for the Indy Shorts Film Festival, which starts Tuesday, July 23. Lots of shorts will be screened, including documentaries, horror, romance, and films with local interest. The screenings will be at Living Room Theatres in the Bottleworks district or at Newfields through Sunday, July 28. Visit IndyShorts.org and snag seats now.
• The Mass Ave Mile Summer Festival and sidewalk sale will take place in the 600 block of Mass Ave. on Saturday, July 20 from 11 a.m.-5 p.m. with lots of shopping, performances on the IndyFringe on Wheels. The Bottleworks vendor fair just up the street a bit will also be that day. Find a spot to park and spend the whole day on one street!
• Arts for Lawrence sponsors a Friday at the Fort event featuring food trucks, a beer/wine tent, and live music from 6-9 p.m. at the Fort Ben Cultural Campus at 8920 Otis Ave. On July 12, the Brandon Meeks Trio will play jazz and soul. July 26 will feature Vinnie and the Moochers. Bring a lawn chair or blanket and enjoy the free shows!
