INDIANA —The Indiana Department of Natural Resources offered tips to homeowners so that birds don’t fly into windows. The secret is to break up the reflection in the windows, because birds see the trees and sky reflected in the glass and think it is real. Up to one billion birds die in the U.S. annually from striking glass, but you can reduce the number at home by making your windows safe for birds.
Apply visible patterns to the outside of the windows. Patterns need to be on the outside of the glass as to not be hidden by the reflections. Make sure markings are spaced 2 inches apart and are a minimum of 1/8 inch thick, so birds can see them.
