INDIANAPOLIS — The Perfect Storm is set in the 1960’s. Momma E (Elmetris Bellstorm), owner of Bellstorm Records, located in the heart of Indiana Avenue, is preparing for the annual birthday party she throws for the community matriarch Miss Pearlie. The party is interrupted by a storm that is moving through the area. This storm may be the perfect opportunity for Momma E’s son, Noah, to learn how important music and history is to this community who is dealing with the gentrification of their beloved Indiana Avenue.
The Perfect Storm is one of a series of plays celebrating the vivid heritage Indiana Avenue dubbed “The Harlem of the Midwest,” for its thriving culture of Black-owned businesses, performing arts and educational influence. The plays would explore the impact of displacement and gentrification in Indianapolis and the jazz legacy that attracted the most renowned musicians of the 20th Century.
Performances are scheduled for Friday, Jan. 12 and Saturday, Jan. 13 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 14 at 2 p.m. at the District Theatre, 627 Massachusetts Ave. General Admission tickets are $12 and available online at https://indydistricttheatre.vbotickets.com/events
