CUMBERLAND — The town of Cumberland will host the 12th annual Weihnachtsmarkt, a German winter market on December 2 from 12-7 p.m., Cumberland will close U.S. 40 to celebrate the holidays with artisan vendors, traditional food and beer, kids activities, holiday entertainment, and so much more. The event will be held in historic Cumberland on East Washington St. from Muessing to Starter St.
One of the major attractions of the market are the many vendors offering an array of handcrafted gifts, from unique ornaments to cozy scarves and more.
No German market is complete without hearty food and beer. Food trucks and alcohol vendors (21 and older only) will have a variety of locally brewed and distilled beverages.
If it’s entertainment you’re looking for, expect everything from ballet with the Indiana Ballet Conservatory (3:00-3:30) to Oopmpapa’s Tuba Quartet from noon-12:30 p.m. Traditional German dancing and music and much more will happen on stage, and Sadie Johnson will sign at the tree lighting from 6-7 p.m.
The Weihnachtsmarkt and the holidays are all about the little ones, and kids will have lots of activities to choose from, including reindeer games. They may also enjoy the free carriage rides with the family from noon-4 p.m.
Santa will arrive at the Gap Meeting House and visit with children from 12-5 p.m., and a couple of his reindeer will even make an appearance from 3-5 p.m. He’ll also be on hand with the annual holiday tree lighting, complete with fireworks.
Admission is free.
