INDIANAPOLIS — Phalen Leadership Academies (PLA) recently celebrated 10 years of impact in the Indianapolis area and looked ahead to the future by sharing plans for and hosting tours of the future site of the Sean Cowdrey Health and Wellness Sports Complex. The complex will offer a diverse range of multi-generational health and wellness, sports, and workforce development programming to the Far Eastside, a historically underinvested and underserved community.
The complex, which will be built in close partnership with local residents and organizations on the campus located at 43rd and Mitthoeffer, will function as a community gathering spot and is a direct response to the escalating needs of the area. The facility will feature a health and wellness clinic, indoor and outdoor athletic facilities and workforce development programming through PLA University.
With the partnership and support of philanthropic partners, PLA aims to raise $10 million to develop this project by 2025. To date, the academy has received lead funding from the NFL Foundation Grassroots Program and the Glick Family Foundation.
Since its founding in 2013, PLA has transformed seven F-rated schools into A-rated schools across the state of Indiana, earned school rankings of #4 and #5 in the district for strongest growth, achieved an average of 92% passing on the state third-grade reading exam, and increased scholar passing rates on the state ELA and Math tests by 11% in just one year – the highest standardized test growth for all schools in Central Indiana.
