• Garfield Park will host a Pops Series this summer on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. Concerts include the Philharmonic Orchestra of Indianapolis (June 21), Pride of Indy (July 19), and Starlighters Big Band (July 26). Concerts continue through September 6. Garfield Park is located at 2345 Pagoda Dr. on the southeast side. Admission is free to the music series.
• The Indianapolis Public Library’s “Blast Off to Camp Read S’More” runs June 5-July 29 and allows kids to win prizes from time spent reading over the summer. Also, there is an adult reading camp that allows grown-ups to read for great prizes like an overnight stay at the Bottleworks Hotel. • The Indiana Dept. of Veterans Affairs hosts Operation Back to School that helps veterans and their families that are experiencing financial hardship to pay for essential school expenses for dependent children that reside in their homes. Children attending K-12 or adults in college may be eligible. The program runs June 1-Aug. 31. Information on how to apply is available online at in.gov/dva
• Northbound Post Rd. will be closed between Pendleton Pike and CSX Railroad after June 5 for approximately two months for IndyGo’s Purple Line construction. Detours will be marked.
• “More Than Corn,” a documentary and celebration of Indiana food and farming, will be shown on Sunday, June 4 at Kan-Kan Cinema. There will be a cocktail reception at 3 p.m. featuring ingredients from Full Hand Farms and a showing of the feature film version of the film at 4 p.m. Visit kankanindy.com to reserve your seats.
• The Growing Places Farm Stand will be opening soon. The community to stop by the farm at the Chase Legacy Center, 727 Oriental St., on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4-7 p.m. to purchase fresh produce. SNAP benefits are accepted. The farm stand will open June 14-Oct. 26.
• The U.S. 40 Yard Sale will be held May 31-June 4 for the 20th year. All along U.S. 40 (Washington St.), there will be sales from Maryland to Missouri. Keep your eyes peeled for people setting up along the historic road with great bargains.
• The 57th Annual Indy Strawberry Festival will be held at Christ Church Cathedral on Thursday, June 8 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. This annual event is held on Monument Circle and brings together everyone to enjoy the first taste of Hoosier summer. “The Works” is $10 worth of homemade shortcake, strawberries, ice cream, and whipped topping, Strawberries and ice cream are $3. Cash and credit cards are accepted. Proceeds go to charity.
• First Friday this month features great art, music, and more in various locations throughout the city from 6-9 p.m. Visit Irvington’s main drag (East Washington St.), or the Harrison Center (1505 N. Delaware) or Circle City Industrial Complex (1125 Brookside Ave.) for a chance to see what your creative friends and neighbors have been up to this past month.
