• There is free civil legal help available for eligible Warren Township families thanks to the “Lawyer in the School” program. Professionals will hold clinics on the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays of the month while school is in session at Moorhead Community Resource Center between 2:00-4:30 p.m. They may be able to help with evictions, FSSA benefits and healthcare, housing issues, and driver’s license reinstatements. Walk-ins are welcome. Moorhead is located at 8400 E. 10th St.
• Congratulations are in order to the teachers and leaders of both Mount Vernon High School and Junior High School, who were awarded STEM Certification by the Indiana Dept. of Education.
• Summer Nights films will return to Newfields in the Amphitheater beginning Friday, June 2 with The Big Sleep (1946). Every Friday will be a new film, from classics like Rear Window to family movies like Finding Nemo. This year they will be showing the Indy Shorts International Film Festival winners on Saturday, July 22 and be working with the Indiana Black Expo’s Film Festival. Tickets are $9 for members or $12 for general public. Tickets can be purchased at discovernewfields.org. Newfields is located at 4000 N. Michigan Ave.
• The Historic Fort Ben Farmers Market begins Thursday, June 1 from 4-7 p.m. at the Fort Ben Cultural Campus, 8900 Otis Ave. The market will be open every Thursday through Oct. 5.
• State and local law enforcement agencies will be increasing patrols as part of the national “Click It or Ticket” campaign to ensure drivers are using their seat belts. Last year, 236 unbuckled individuals died in accidents. Law enforcement will also be checking to see if kids are properly restrained in vehicles.
• Did you know that the Metropolitan Planning Organization has an app for bike riders? Visit indympo.org to access an interactive map for riders throughout the city that notes trails, bike racks, and other necessaries for bike commuters and recreational riders.
• The Photographer’s Club and Fine Arts Dept. of Warren Central is hosting and exhibit of photography and fine art from their students at the Bona Thompson Memorial Center, 5350 University Ave. that will be open until Sunday, May 21. Hours are Saturday and Sunday from 1-4 p.m. Over 200 pieces are on display, and this is its final weekend, so check it out!
• Hancock County Arts will host a Plein Air Paint Out on Saturday, Jun3 3 from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. All are welcome. Meet up at the Hancock Co. Courthouse, 9 E. Main St. in Greenfield and fan out from there for great painting spots in the area. Registration is $10 per adult and available online at hancockcountyarts.org.
• The Indy Urban Acres Plant Sale continues on Saturday, May 20 with a native garden workshop from 10-11 a.m. The doors open at 8 a.m.-1 p.m. and will be held at 7700 E. 21st St. (between Shadeland and Franklin). Get there early for the best selection of native plants, herbs, vegetables, and much more. This is the best place to buy tomato and pepper plants of all kinds. Sales support the mission of Indy Urban Acres to supply produce to community partners that help households experiencing food insecurity. The last 2023 sale will be Saturday, May 29 (Memorial Day).
