INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) recently announced that as of March 17, 2023, crews have filled 109,987 potholes using 2,370.31 tons of hot and cold-mix asphalt thus resolving 7,251 service requests so far in 2023. This is largely due to Indy DPW’s continued investment in the maintenance and rehabilitation of thoroughfares during the past several years. And with an unprecedented $10 million budgeted specifically for thoroughfare strip-patching this year, Indy DPW expects to see major improvements in the coming months.
DPW’s street maintenance progress this year can also be contributed to the early availability of hot-mix asphalt. While historically opened in March or April, DPW has worked with asphalt plants to open earlier in recent years to supply street crews with the material they need. This year, asphalt plants opened on February 21.
Residents are encouraged to report potholes via the RequestIndy website, the RequestIndy mobile app on iPhone or Android, or by calling the Mayor’s Action Center at 317-327-4622.
Crews have also begun strip-patching for the season. More comprehensive than simply filling potholes, strip-patching requires specialized equipment to mill the entire width of a travel lane before laying down a new surface along an extended roadway segment. Less “seams” in the new pavement make it less susceptible to precipitation and therefore deterioration.
