• The Indianapolis Public Library is hosting “Season’s Readings” for donations of children’s books through Jan. 7 at all locations throughout the county. You can choose children’s books to take home for free (gift wrapping stations are provided at most sites). You can also donate new or gently used books at the library. It’s a great way to share your love of reading with a young one.
• The Genealogical Society of Marion County will host a presentation by Steve Barnett, and a holiday program that celebrates the Civil War First Family that will be inducted into the Civil War Families of Marion County Society. The event will be held Saturday, Dec. 10 from 1-3 p.m. at the Bona Thompson Center, 5350 University Ave. in Irvington. There will be light refreshments and door prizes. Register in advance via e-mail to webmaster@genealogyindy.org for the presentation.
• Newfields is hosting Las Posadas at Winterlights, their outdoor winter wonderland, on Thursday, Dec. 15 from 5-11 p.m. Along with Arte Mexicano en Indiana, this single night celebration honors Las Posadas, which recognizes Mary’s journey to find shelter during Jesus’ birth. The ticket price includes a Mexican hot chocolate and churros as well as special musical performances. Tickets are $39 each for adults, $35 for seniors, and $30 for youth 6-17.
