Applause!: Dec. 24-Jan. 6

• Thank you to everyone who donated to this year’s Gaia Works toy drive! The kids of Coburn Place and other needy families in the area will benefit from your generosity. Also, a big thanks go out to Jan and her Magick Candle elves for wrapping and delivering all the goodies.
• East Market St. is now open between Delaware and Alabama downtown. The changes have made it easier for people to enjoy City Market as well as to increase access at the City-County building for pedestrians.
• The state will begin offering “Y” specialty license plates on Jan. 3, 2022, with proceeds going to YMCAs across the state. The plate can be ordered through the BMV Web site, or at any BMV branch in the state.
• The Indianapolis Public Library will be closed Dec. 24-26. For New Year’s, they will close at 5 p.m. on the 31st and be closed all day Jan. 1. Regular hours will resume Jan. 2.
• First Financial recently announced several grants for Indianapolis an Indiana organizations that support workforce development and education. Back on My Feet, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Indiana, Junior Achievement of Central Indiana, Public Advocates in Community re-Entry, We Bloom and Sheltering Wings all received funding to help them meet their goals.
• Interesting new project at Garfield Park will be launched Monday, Dec. 27 from 4-7 p.m. Frozen Frequencies will be two semi-permanent augmented reality soundtracks for walking around Garfield Park created by Rob Funhouser and Landon Caldwell. They will create a work that highlights their favorite walking paths through the park, which can be heard by accessing the platform echoes.xyz on a smartphone. QR codes will allow listeners to access the music as they walk the paths. Printed maps will also be available.
• Want to start the New Year off on the right foot? Join the Indiana State Park’s traditional First Day Hike on Saturday, Jan. 1 at 1 p.m. at Fort Benjamin Harrison State Park in Lawrence. Meet at the Delaware Lake picnic shelter for a two-mile hike on a paved loop. Dogs on leashes are welcome, and hot chocolate will be provided with supplies last. The park is located at 6000 N. Post Road. Admission to the park is $7 per car.
• Get your tickets early for Dance Kaleidoscope’s “Star Crossed Lovers,” two short dance interpretations of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Actors from the Indianapolis Shakespeare Company will perform the prologue from the play. The show will run Jan. 6-9 for four performances at the IRT Mainstage, 140 W.
