INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Public Library board of trustees convened and in a joint decision between the board and CEO Jackie Nytes, have confirmed that Nytes will step away from her role, effective at the end of August.
Nytes has served The Library for 23 years — as the CEO since 2012, and additionally from 1988-2001 in other roles. Nytes was most recently reappointed at the end of 2019, with her three-year term originally scheduled to conclude at the end of 2022. Leading a staff of nearly 600 employees, IndyPL has seen several significant activities during her tenure, including expanding library access to students across the city, securing funding for the Center for Black Literature & Culture at Central Library, and adding new facilities to improve services.
“It has been my greatest joy to serve the Indianapolis community in this role, and I feel fortunate to have facilitated many significant and lasting changes for The Library and how we serve our city,” said Nytes. “From our efforts with technology literacy and e-books to partnerships with arts and cultural organizations to our intentional efforts to diversify our materials, I am proud to have worked with an amazing staff to steer the Library with passion and commitment. I am grateful to everyone who has supported us, inside the Library and outside in the community, in accomplishing all that we have together. And I am grateful for the many dedicated Board members I have worked for over the years who understood the needs of the community and my vision to serve them. I look forward to returning as a lifelong patron of The Library, and am excited for all it will continue to do for Indianapolis.”
A search process will begin immediately to find the next CEO for The Library, a position requiring a majority vote from the board for appointment.
