One evening about a month ago, while driving home from work, as I turned the corner onto Julian I saw the back of an artist painting at an easel and thought the neighbor must have commissioned a painting. I realized as I got closer that the artist was facing the wrong way and actually painting a scene down my alley and the back of my 106 yr. old garage and house that needs to be painted badly. It was William Lawson (local artist) who said he loved the angles of the houses and the blue color (he finds alleys more interesting). I was shocked that my old garage was the subject of a painting, when I have been so embarrassed by it’s condition (will be painted soon — same color). I was so honored, I have bought the painting.
I’m an artist myself and both Will and I went to Herron School of Art (for me it was many years ago and I had several of the instructors that Will so admires like Harry Davis). Will enjoys the works of Hoosier artists from the 1930s and 40s.
Will has been commissioned to do many Irvington homes. If you would like to have yours done, contact William Lawson through PM on Facebook. These paintings are done outdoors right in front of your house (plein air) in oils. During the Irvington Garden Tour June 27th, several plein air artists will be in gardens throughout the tour including Will down on South Audubon. Thanks again Will!
