INDIANAPOLIS — The Indianapolis Department of Public Works (Indy DPW) expects to begin work on a significant full-depth pavement rehabilitation project for Delaware Street from Maryland Street to Fort Wayne Avenue beginning the week of March 15. The approximately $3.8 million project includes removing old trolley tracks and street resurfacing, sidewalk and ADA ramp improvements to complement the installation of two new IndyGo Super Stop locations and dedicated bus lanes along the east side of Delaware Street.
Construction will be conducted in phases, with one-half of Delaware Street under construction at a time, to allow continuous traffic flow throughout the project. Traffic and pedestrians should expect temporary lane shifts, including the use of parking lanes for vehicle travel during scheduled work, as well as sidewalk detours and impacts at intersection crossings. Vehicles will be restricted from parking on Delaware Street during construction. Delaware Street should reopen in late 2021.
Future plans will include the conversion of Fort Wayne Avenue between Delaware and Alabama Streets to two-way traffic, adding new pavement markings, signalization and street resurfacing. Once the conversion is fully complete, Fort Wayne Avenue will feature two-way traffic from Pennsylvania to Alabama Streets.
