From The Indianapolis Star, Friday, December 24, 1920: The city’s Christmas holiday celebration began last night with public festivities held under large community Christmas trees that had been placed around Indianapolis. From City Hall and the Federal Building in the downtown district to the neighborhoods of Fountain Square, Irvington, Brightwood, Haughville, and elsewhere varied programs featuring music from an Italian band to Clay’s Military band accompanied good old-fashioned community singing of Christmas songs. On Christmas Day, a dozen brass quartets will play as they wind their way through the city and young women from the recreation training school will visit downtown hotels and railroad stations joyously singing Christmas carols. Although the number of needy families in Indianapolis this Christmas is increasing, charitable and benevolent organizations will carry the yuletide spirit into every home, so children know Santa Claus does exist.
