• Eastside author of true crime novels Carol Sissom has a new book coming out, The Clue at the Haunted Bridge of the Monon Trail, just in time for Halloween. This book involves the murders of two girls in Delphi, Abby and Libby German, and she lays out the case that the murders are linked to other senseless killings in Indiana. Due to COVID-19, Carol won’t be able to have book signings, but the new book will be available on her Facebook page, the Carol Sissom/Author page.
• Buck Creek Players will produce an outdoor staged reading of the comedy Pygmalion, the classic tale of Eliza Doolittle and Professor Henry Higgins, Saturday, Oct. 10 at 4:30 p.m., and Sunday, Oct. 11 at 2:30 p.m. Please note this is a staged reading, with limited costuming and props; actors and audience will be socially distanced. The event will be held on the east side of the Buck Creek Playhouse (11150 Southeastern Ave.), with reserved lawn seating for parties of 1 to 6. Patrons are encouraged to spread a blanket or bring lawn chairs (please select blanket or lawn chair seating at time of purchase or reservation). Bring a picnic (no alcohol is permitted on the Playhouse grounds) and make yourself comfortable. Tickets are $10 per person, available online at buckcreekplayers.com
• The public is invited to the SALI National Abstract Art Exhibition XVI, an annual event sponsored by the Southside Art League, Inc. and hosted by The Garfield Park Arts Center, 2432 Conservatory Dr. This unique exhibit is dedicated to showcasing the best two-dimensional abstract paintings from across the U.S. All 44 paintings are for sale, so art collectors are advised to come early for the best selection. A People’s Choice Award will be determined by a vote of visitors to the show. Paintings will hang October 2-30. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, there will be an invitation only Awards Ceremony on Friday, Oct. 2 from, 6 – 8 p.m.
• Indianapolis Animal Care Services is holding a “FALL in Love” event through Saturday, Sept. 26 special adoption event. With the kennels at capacity, they will have a free adoption of cats and dogs, and showcase their available dogs in a “pup-kin” patch. Adoptions are by appointment only. To see the available pets, visit indy.gov/agency/animal-care-services and click on the Adopt a Pet link. You might also want to consider fostering a cat or dog until it can find a good forever home.
• As part of El Tendedero/The Clothesline Indiana – the year-long creative initiative to bring awareness to sexual assault in Indiana – Kan-Kan Cinema and the Indianapolis Public Library are hosting book and film discussions. On Sept. 30, IMCPL will host an online discussion of the book Sold from 7:00-8:30 p.m. (register at indypl.org). Kan-Kan will hold an online discussion of the film The Invisible War on Oct. 6 at 7 p.m. (register on Eventbrite, search for Kan-Kan). Online events are free.
