From The Indianapolis News, Thursday, August 12, 1920: The 1st Division military circus began its three day exhibition today with a parade before noon through the Indianapolis business district witnessed by thousands welcoming the heroes of the late war. Led by a mounted police platoon, followed by artillery and soldiers in overseas uniform, the procession included lions, elephants, and gilded wagons lent by amusement companies to help the division in its fundraising efforts for a memorial. The circus lot on West Washington St. has been prepared with trenches, shell holes, barbed wire entanglements, and search lights to faithfully show the conditions under which raids and assaults were conducted in the Aisne-Marne offensive. Artillery, tanks, and machine guns along with a pyrotechnic display will faithfully reproduce the roar and flashes of battle. Trick riding, acrobatic stunts, and clowns will delight all.
