• National Night Out will be on Tuesday, Aug. 4 beginning at 6 p.m. Because of COVID-19 restrictions, this year’s celebrations will be modified to a Blue Lights National Night Out. Residents are encouraged to turn on an outside blue light that acknowledges the long-standing police/community engagement. Over 38 million people take part in the National Night Out annually.
• The Beech Grove Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution have cancelled their Suffragist Celebration Walk slated for August. However, they are encouraging everyone to don their best white Suffragist suits and join them on Monday, August 3 at 7 p.m. at the Beech Grove Common Council meeting when the Proclamation from the Mayor will be read into the record. The meeting is held at 806 Main St. in Beech Grove.
• Indy Thunder Beep Ball is hosting the 2020 Indy Thunder Invitational as part of the seventh annual Anthem National Fitness Challenge. Games will take place July 30-Aug. 1 at the Midwest Sports & Social Complex in Indianapolis, 7509 New Augusta Rd. The eight teams in the tournament represent four states, including the Indy Edge from our fair city. Games will begin at 8 a.m. each day with the anticipated ending times around 6 p.m. on Thursday and Friday. The championship game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. on Saturday. All games are free for spectators. Beep baseball is a form of baseball that can be played by people who are visually impaired, using a ball that beeps and bases that buzz. The Indy Thunder have won the last four National Beep Baseball Association World Series titles.
• Indy DPW announced that the Broad Ripple Avenue pedestrian corridor will be re-opened to one-way, eastbound vehicular traffic each night from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. at the discretion of IMPD. Pedestrians should expect to see motorized traffic on Broad Ripple Avenue during these hours at least on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
• For the first time in the 500 Festival’s 65 year history, all events leading up to the Indy 500 will be cancelled. This includes the Memorial Service, runs, parade, breakfast and the kick-off. However, the race will be shown live in the Indianapolis area. The race will be held Sunday, Aug. 23 beginning at 2:30 p.m.
• The Indiana Historical Society has reopened as of Tuesday, July 28. The History Center and Stardust Cafe are open, with lots of interesting exhibits about Indiana history and notable Hoosiers. If you are uncomfortable visiting in person, try a virtual tour at indianahistory.org
• The Lutheran Child and Family Services Sharing Place is in need of donations to serve those who use their pantry at 6501 Sunnyside Rd. They are in need of adult and baby/toddler diapers and canned pasta. They could also use more volunteers for their operations.
