Applause!: Oct. 25-31

• Congratulations to the Warren Central Gold Brigade Marching Band & Guard for winning Best Percussion, Best General Effect, Best Visual, Best Music, and earned First Place in Class AAAA at the Centerville Invitational in Centerville, OH.
• Brookside Park Haunted House will be open Friday and Saturday, Oct. 25 and 26 from 4:30-6:30 (lights on), and 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Brookside Park Family Center 3500 Brookside Parkway S. Dr. There is a $3 admission charge.
• The Heartland Film Festival Awards were announced Oct. 19. The Grand Prize for Best Narrative Feature (and a cash prize of $15,000) went to Bora Kim’s “House of Hummingbird,” and Waad al-Kateab and Edward Watts’ “For Sama” took home two awards, including the $15,000 Grand Prize for Best Documentary Feature, as well as the Richard D. Propes Social Impact Documentary Award and the $2,000 that came with that award. Each of the finalists in the Narrative and Documentary competition categories received a $1,000 cash prize. HIFF’s Best Premiere Awards were presented to Julie Sokolow’s “Barefoot: The Mark Baumer Story,” (Best Premiere Documentary) and Nora Fingscheidt’s “Systemsprenger (System Crasher)” (Best Premiere Narrative). The film festival’s Best International Feature Film Oscar Contender (which came with a $2,000 cash prize) went to Pedro Almodóvar’s “Pain and Glory (Dolor y gloria).”
• On Sunday, Oct. 27, IndyGo will make minor schedule adjustments to improve-on time performance on selected fixed routes and on the Red Line. On the east side, Routes 8, 10, 21, and 87 will have minor time changes and will no longer serve Washington Square Mall. • On Monday, Oct. 28, hear from five poets from the Great Lakes region as their share poetry from their book Undocumented: Great Lakes Poets Laureate on Social Justice at 7:30 p.m. at Central Library. The evening will feature co-editor Ron Riekki and Poets Laureate Pauletta Hansel, Karen Kovacik, Aliki Barnstone, and Shari Wagner. The program will be held in the Riley Room.
• The Franklin Rd. branch of the library will host a Spooky Dance Party for children of all ages and their adults on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 10:15 a.m. Scarves and rhythm instruments will be provided for added fun. The library is located at 5550 S. Franklin Rd.
• Indianapolis Animal Care Services (IACS) is out of room, and needs people to adopt dogs and cats! The shelter is offering free adoptions through the rest of the month. Please consider rescuing a pet rather than buying — all IACS pets are spayed/neutered and up to date on shots. The shelter is open every day except Wednesday and is located at 2600 S. Harding St.
• Butler University’s mascot Butler Blue III, a.k.a. Trip, will be retiring at the end of the 2019-2020 academic year. Trip is an 8 year old bulldog, and will remain with his caretakers in retirement. A search for a replacement is underway.
