INDIANAPOLIS — Mayor Joe Hogsett with the Office of Sustainability, Indy Parks and Recreation and the Department of Public Works (DPW) recently unveiled the City’s first zero emissions electric lawnmowers. During the summer months, ground-level ozone can reach high levels, which impacts the amount of work park maintenance teams can perform. The city’s new Mean Green electric mowers produce zero emissions and will aid the city in reducing its carbon footprint and allow crews to mow grass on Knozone Action days when ground-level ozone is high.
With the new electric mowers, city maintenance crews can now mow Indy Parks trails and parks on Knozone Action days without negatively impacting our city’s air quality. The adoption of the electric and solar powered mowers into the Indy Parks maintenance fleet costs less to maintain because the new electric mowers do not use any fuel or require the replacement of moving parts, such as belts, that are on conventional mowers. In addition, the new mowers are significantly quieter in comparison to combustion engine mowers.
With DPW’s purchase of these two electric mowers as part of a pilot program, Indy Parks crews will be able to maintain the city’s parks and protect the environment while eliminating the number of pollutants released into the air. The mowers are manufactured, in part, by Hydro-Gear, a local Indianapolis company.
