INDIANAPOLIS — City officials recently celebrated the appropriation of $4,958,550 in federal transportation dollars to help fund the rehabilitation of the 16th Street bridge over White River. The five-span reinforced concrete arch bridge was built in 1948 and is ready for replacement.
The bridge rehab is one of 12 projects for which the City of Indianapolis is receiving federal funds from the MPO. Funding for all 12 projects totals $20,520,913 and will be available in State Fiscal Year 2024.
As part of an annual funding process, City of Indianapolis Department of Public Works staff submitted projects for consideration to the Metropolitan Planning Organization, which is responsible for planning and programming federal transportation funds in the eight-county Central Indiana region.
In addition to the 16th Street bridge rehabilitation, the other projects include pedestrian safety enhancements like new crosswalk warning signs, flashing beacons, and/or curb ramps in four areas with high crash rates, intersection improvements on the north side, a roundabout at Post Rd. and Raymond St., bicycle enhancements related to the Michigan Street, Pacers Bikeshare extension, bridge rehabilitation at Emerson Avenue over Pogue’s Run, bridge rehabilitation at Pennsylvania Street over Williams Creek, and roadway rehabilitation on Post Rd. from Washington St. to I-70.
