Applause! May 24-June 6

• Just a friendly reminder that federal, state, and local government will be closed on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27. Trash collection will be on a sliding schedule, with Monday trash picked up Tuesday, and so on.
• On June 1, the Indianapolis Public Library will kick off its Summer Reading Program across the city. Visit the Irvington Branch on the corner of Audubon and East Washington from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. to register and for some fun activities for kids inside and on the plaza at 1 p.m. The Garfield Branch on Shelby St. near the entry to Garfield Park will hold celebrations from 11-3, and Fountain Square will also host celebrations from noon-4.
• At its commencement on Saturday, May 18, Martin University conferred honorary doctorates to Retired Sheriff Frank Anderson and Reverend Wayne Moore. Anderson was the first African-American Sheriff in Marion County and Moore is the Senior Pastor of Olivet Missionary Baptist Church.
• IndyFringe will host an outdoor stage on Saturday, May 25 at 7 p.m. featuring Indy’s own Brenda Williams with a lineup of great R&B performers. Tickets are only $20, and the show is a rain/shine event (bring your own lawn chairs). The show will be held at IndyFringe in the secluded garden area, 719 E. St. Clair.
• Now that spring has sprung, check out the Spades Park Bird Sanctuary from dusk to dawn. Special plantings by dedicated volunteers over the years attract all sorts of native birds, including Yellowthroated Warblers and Belted Kingfishers. Bring your binoculars and bird identification book (or phone app).
• Celia Farran will be performing at the Magic Candle on Friday, May 24 at 7 p.m. Great music with an abundance of good vibes — should be a great show! Limited seating, so get tickets in advance at the Magic Candle, 203 S. Audubon for only $20, or $25 at the door.
• Sign up for the Steeped in Historu Workshop on June 15 at 10 a.m. at the Irvington Historical Society, 5350 University Ave. Learn how to investigate the history of your home with free sources, learn the history of Irvington homes with Paul Diebold and Bill Guide during a two hour walking tour (with a break for lunch at a local eatery). Tickets are only $10 and available through the Irvington Historical Society Facebook page or call 317-602-2962.
• Terry Kirts will be the featured poet at the Poets Laureate of Lawrence on Tuesday, May 28 from 7-9 p.m. at the Theatre at the Fort, 8920 Otis Ave. Kirts is a dining critic and contributing editor for Indianapolis Monthly. Admission is free.
