• The 2019 Irvington Churches Music Festival will be held Sunday, May 19 at 6:30 p.m. at Downey Ave. Christian Church, 111 S. Downey Ave. Featured acts include Audio Diner, Irvington Presbyterian Flute Choir, Aire Male, and many more artists. A goodwill offering of canned goods is encouraged.
• There will be a meeting regarding the Blue Line Rapid Transit Project on Monday, May 20 from 5-7 p.m. at IndyGo Headquarters, 1501 W. Washington St. The Blue Line will serve one of the most active transit corridors that already exists today on Washington Street from the airport to Cumberland.This public meeting is an opportunity to receive updates on the upcoming project. IndyGo staff will be offering a 15-minute presentation at the start of the session as well as answer public questions and concerns. Those interested but unable to attend the scheduled public meeting are encouraged to submit comments to Customer Service (317-635-3344) or online via the comment form at www.IndyGo.net.
• Check out the Market on the Pennsy in Irvington on Saturday, May 18 from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. The market will be open on the portion of the Pennsy at 5447 Bonna Ave. in front of Coal Yard Coffee. The open air market will feature vintage, handmade and local vendors, plus Indy’s Food Co-op farmer’s market.
• Also in Irvington, explore the eastern part of the historic neighborhood on Saturday, May 18 from noon-4 p.m. There are a number of new businesses at 6117 E. Washington St. that you might find interesting, including a bakery, ice cream shop, CBD shop, and much more.
• The Indiana Black Legislative Caucus will begin its annual series of town halls across the state, beginning with one in Indianapolis on Saturday, May 18 from noon-2 p.m. at the Julia Carson Government Center, 300 E. Fall Creek Parkway North Drive. Residents are encouraged to attend to discuss what they want to see lawmakers address in the 2020 legislative sessions.
• Congratulations are in order for Next Generation Hoosier Educators Scholarship recipients in the area, including Andrew Clegg an Mamie DeFreese of Scecina, Stephanie Gerrish of Perry Meridian, Taryn Locke of Lawrence North, and Walter Toebes of Herron. The scholarships are given to top-performing students who commit to teaching in Indiana for five consecutive years; they are eligible to receive $7,500 per year for up to four years to obtain a teaching license.
• Local police will participate in the push to patrol for drivers and passengers not wearing seat belts through Memorial Day. The Click It or Ticket campaign seeks to enforce the seat belt law in Indiana. Unrestrained drivers are 10 times more likely to die in crashes in cars and SUVs, 14 times in pickups, and 15 times in vans.
