The Winner Didn’t Win

The 46th running of the Kentucky Derby will go down as the most controversial horse race ever run! Maximum Security, the pre-race favorite, was the fastest horse on a muddy track and crossed the finish line first. Remember that the race lasts about 2 minutes. However, an immediate objection was filed and after looking at the tapes of the race and deliberating for around 15 minutes the race stewards stripped Maximum Security of his win and awarded the blanket of roses to 2nd place finisher Country House — who was carrying 65-1 odds. It seems Security on the back stretch slipped his lane and impeded the progress of both Wae of Wills and Long Range Toddy. The evidence was there for all to see and it was the right call to make. However, it meant for the first time in it’s history the winner of a Kentucky Derby was disqualified.
So Country House will go in the record books as the winner but the “win’ will be unsatisfying and there will always be that feeling that Country House’s name really doesn’t belong in the winners column. Even Donald Trump weighed in on the situation calling the ruling political correctness and damaging to the sport. Maximum Security’s owner Gay West was understandably upset but the steward’s ruling was unchallengeable. The stewards were correct in their ruling but handled the situation about as badly as they could and fans were left dazed and confused. West said he will not run his horse in the Preakness.

Jeopardy Champ Gets a Two Week Vacation

Jeopardy whiz James Holzhauer won his 22nd game last Friday. That’s second only to Ken Jennings 74 wins. Holzhauer’s brother says that the current champ has been training and preparing for decades for his history making run on the popular game show. A recent poll of long time Jeopardy fans has named Holzhauer the “greatest contestant of all time,” even ahead of Ken Jennings.

Colts Rookie Minicamp

The Colts Rookie mini camp was held over the weekend and it gave the media and the fans a chance to meet and observe the new talent as they went through their paces for the first time at the Colts training center. Wide receiver Paris Campbell had the crowd buzzing with his speed and agility. There is a feeling that the team has finally found the perfect complement to T.Y. Hilton as a target for Andrew Luck’s deep passes. Campbell was the Colts’ 3rd pick in the 2nd round. Michigan State safety Khari Willis turned heads with his coverage skills and tackling ability. Willis is the cousin of former Colt receiver and Lucas Oil Circle of Honor member Billy Brooks. All the rookies looked good and there are several who just might develop into difference-makers for the team.
