INDIANAPOLIS — Indiana Landmarks recently announced their 10 Most Endangered sites. Among the buildings that have unique or historic interest that are at risk of being demolished include the Church of the Holy Cross, which gives the near eastside neighborhood Holy Cross its name. Built in 1921, the current church is fine example of Italian Renaissance Revival architecture, boasting a 136 foot tall bell tower. Over the last several years, the congregation has shrunk and the Archdiocese of Indianapolis merged Holy Cross with another parish in 2014. In 2015, part of the arched portico collapsed, and there were no funds to repair the structure. The church closed shortly thereafter, but the adjacent gym and school are still used.
